THE NOBLE GAS FISH

Neon tetras are a ubiquitous aquarium fish which became very popular because of their small size, ease of care, and beautiful iridescent red and blue stripes.  The stripes become temporarily invisible after the fish has been exposed to darkness or stress for a while.  They are native to South America but are now bred commercially by the millions in Asia.

In 1957, they sold for $2,500 apiece (which would probably translate to over $21,000 in today's funds).  They can now be purchased for a couple of bucks..
